2017- 2018 Art at Horton Middle School
1st Quarter:
5TH Grade learned how about line, color, and movement in Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night painting. Then created their own using oil pastels.
Afterwards they examined optical illusions and how an illusion can "trick the mind" by creating their Op Art.
6th Grade learned about M.C. Escher, the use of tessellation in his artwork and created their own to discover positive and negative space in an artwork. Afterwards, they visited the Renaissance to learn about Illuminated manuscripts and created an illuminated letter based on personal images and overlapping.
7th Grade celebrated Dias de los Muertes by creating Folk Art sculptures based on Catrina Dolls. They used recycled materials to create their own sculpture. Afterwards, they created an Illuminated Letter based on personal imagery, overlapping, and the use of color to create emphasis.
8th Grade worked on Adinkra Art, patterns and symbolism found in West African Art and created their own painting based on symbols. Afterwards, portraits were created, first by looking at abstract art and then created their own abstract portrait while learning about artists Kehinde Wiley, Kimmy Cantrell, and Chuck Close. Then they created a realistic portrait to identify facial proportion and value. Backgrounds were based on patterns.
